Super cute and super fast and fun to make is my Oliver Otter. I use these primarily as little key chains to brighten someone’s day. Oliver has been in high demand and I’ve decided to write him up to share with everyone. I couldn’t write my patterns without a great team with me so I want to show off some of their lovely makes of Oliver Otter and it is amazing how each one takes on a personality all of its own.

Abbreviations – US terms (UK terms are available via Ravelry)

CH – Chain

SC – Single Crochet

INC – Increase

DEC – Decrease

SL ST – Slip Stitch

ST – Stitch

F/O – Finish Off

MR – Magic Ring

Materials

3.5mm crochet hook

Paint box cotton DK I used shade Coffee Bean

Fibre Filling

8mm safety eyes

Scissors

Tapestry needle

Optional key chain

Optional stitch marker

Optional pins

Notes

Each round is worked in a continuous round unless otherwise stated.
A stitch marker is recommended for keeping track of your stitches for each round.
Increase means to place 2 stitches in the same stitch from the previous round.

Decrease means to reduce the number of stitches to 1 working over 2 stitches.
Instructions inside ( ) are to be repeated.
The otter is worked from the top of the head down.

Key chain can be added by making a loop at the top of the otter and attaching the jump ring of the key ring. I use the same yarn that I weave in my ends in order to create this.

Head/Body

Round 1: MR 6SC OR [CH 2 and 6SC in the 1st CH] (6)

Round 2: INC in each ST around. (12)

Round 3: (INC, SC) around. (18)

Rounds 4 -13: SC in each ST around. (18)

Add safety eyes between rounds 5 and 6 approximately 3 ST apart.

Round 14: (DEC, SC) around. (12)

Stuff

Round 15: DEC around. (6)

F/O and sew hole closed. Weave in ends.

Embroider on a little nose.

Tail

Round 1: MR 4SC OR [CH 2 and 4SC in the 1st CH] (4)

Round 2: (INC, SC) in each ST around. (6)

Rounds 3 – 6: SC in each ST around (6)

F/O, leaving a long tail for sewing. Flatten and pin in place to the center back at the bottom of the otter body. When you are happy with the placement, sew the tail on. Weave in end.

Ears (Make 2)

Round 1: MR 3SC OR [CH 2 and 3SC in the 1st CH] (3)

F/O, leaving a long tail for sewing. Pin in place behind the otter’s eyes with a bit of a curve and sew on. Weave in ends.

Arms (Make 2)

Round 1: MR 6SC OR [CH 2 and 6SC in the 1st CH] (6)

SL ST to 1st SC. F/O, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Pin in place just below eyes at either side and sew on..Weave in ends.

Legs (Make 2)

Round 1: MR 8SC OR [CH 2 and 8SC in the 1st CH] (8)

SL ST to 1st SC. F/O, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Pin in place just below arms at either side and sew on. Weave in ends..

Add optional key chain.
